Oral Exams at

Routine Wellness Visits

Dental health is checked at every wellness appointment. During these visits, we’ll assess your pet’s mouth, answer any questions you may have, and provide care recommendations tailored to each pet’s needs. Comprehensive cleanings are recommended based on age, dental condition, and overall health.

When a Professional Dental Cleaning

is Needed

A professional cleaning allows the veterinarian to look deeper than what is visible during an exam. A dental procedure may include:

  • Pre-anesthetic bloodwork to be sure it’s safe to proceed
  • A full-mouth exam under anesthesia for a calm, pain-free experience
  • Scaling and polishing above and below the gumline
  • Dental X-rays to assess roots and bone health
  • Treatment or extractions as needed

All cleanings are performed under anesthesia to keep pets comfortable and allow for a complete, thorough cleaning—especially under the gumline where most dental disease begins.

Signs of Dental Disease

Because many pets continue eating normally even when uncomfortable, small changes can be easy to miss. Families may notice:

  • Bad breath
  • Discolored teeth
  • Red or bleeding gums
  • Dropping food or chewing on one side
  • Pawing or sensitivity around the mouth or nose
  • Loose or broken teeth
  • Excessive drooling

Home Dental Care

Good habits at home make a big difference. Brushing teeth with pet-safe toothpaste is the gold standard, and many families pair it with dental chews, water additives, or VOHC-approved products for extra support. The Veterinary Oral Health Council provides a helpful list of products that meet dental health standards.
